My first hockey remote

There’s a first time for everything. Last Saturday, it was my first time hanging a remote camera for hockey. Don’t get me wrong. I’m no stranger to remotes in general. I’ve used them at other sports like basketball and soccer. Heck, I’ve even had a remote on the wing of airplane back in 2007. All that being said, in the 6+ years that I’ve been at the Rockford Register Star covering the Rockford IceHogs, the AHL affiliate for the Chicago Blackhawks, I’ve […]

The 1DX and the daily grind

Let’s be honest. Many of the assignments photojournalists are sent to are mundane. Most of our sports assignments are at high schools. Most of the politicians we photograph  are members of the city council or county board. So how does the 1DX hold up with the daily grind of a photojournalist? Very, very well. My pinhole camera

Before we ever touched an SLR in my high school Photo 1 class, my teacher wanted us to understand the basic mechanics and physics of a camera. There was no better way to do that then by building a pinhole camera. A pinhole camera works on the same principle of a camera obscura. Light comes in through a small hole (no lens) and is inverted and projected on whatever medium is available. The camera we built was made out of cardboard, glue […]

Tennessee road trip

It has been many years since I’ve been able to take a real vacation. So after years of just talking about a road trip, a few of my good friends (Gavin Culbertson and Yuefeng Deng) and I decided to take off and head south. I left Rockford and picked them up in St. Louis. From there, we made the first leg of the trip to Louisville, KY where we were able to mooch a free nights sleep and plenty of […]
