School days

Most of my time at the Rockford Register Star, I have been working a night shift. Only within the last year or so have I been working the days. With that comes more school assignments. It’s easy to go to a school and get photos of kids working in the classroom. That is when you can get them to ignore you. It takes a little patience but if you can become the fly on the wall, you can make some […]

A return to Fight College

Every now and then, I have an assignment at a place with absolutely gorgeous light. That is the case with Fight College, a boxing gym in Rockford. I first wen to the gym in April of 2013 shortly after they opened and I immediately noticed the light. Everything is in one big rectangular room. One of the short walls is completely windows. In 2010 while working for the New Castle Courier-Times, I had the opportunity to make photos while in a biplane. This proved to be challenging. I had to hold my camera over my head in the very strong winds and shoot blindly behind me. Last year, I went […]

Stereoscopic photography

One of the beautiful things about photography is that there is always something to learn. Recently, I was talking with a talented young photographer who introduced me to the process of stereoscopic photography, otherwise known as 3-D photography. The idea behind it is simple. Take two images of a subject from two slightly different perspectives. Then in Photoshop, edit the images to filter each perspective to a different color field (seriously a one click process). Line up the images. Then, […]
