Best of 2016

I hate this time of year. This is the time when photographers pull together their best frames from last year. The solid daily frames are tossed aside and we’re left with an internet that is overwhelmed with the best of the best. It’s an amazing thing to see. But I hate it. Photographers make connections with their pictures. Sometimes you make a killer frame. Sometimes the story behind making the image is better than the image itself. That is something a viewer […]

Reactions of volleyball

Volleyball can be a challenging sport to photograph. The plays are quick. Tracking action through the net can cause problems for the camera’s autofocus system. And sometimes all the action looks the same. I was lucky this year. The main volleyball teams I covered had really emotive players. While I got decent action, the reaction really made this season. Here are some of the photos that really stood out this year. And of course, a few action photos from the season.

2014 Contests

I never know what to expect during contest season. I always spend too much time agonizing over which photos to enter. The first results to come in were […]

Gridiron 2014: How the shots were made

High school football season is upon us once again. While that means we get busier on Friday nights, it also means that another Rockford Register Star Gridiron season preview section is in the books. Last year, we played with fire and light. This year, we took things to new depths (pardon the pun). Since the beginning of 2014, the photo staff and sports staff has been collaborating on what to do for this year’s Gridiron section. We had an excellent idea. […]

Favorites of 2013

With 2013 in the past, it’s once again time to share some of my favorite images from the year. As always, it’s easy for photographers to get attached to their images for a variety of reasons. Some images may have been technically challenging to create and required significant planning and anticipation. Others simply captured an excellent moment. My first round of edits left me with near 100 images. I was able to whittle it down to 45 that I really enjoyed […]
