My first hockey remote

There’s a first time for everything. Last Saturday, it was my first time hanging a remote camera for hockey. Don’t get me wrong. I’m no stranger to remotes in general. I’ve used them at other sports like basketball and soccer. Heck, I’ve even had a remote on the wing of airplane back in 2007. All that being said, in the 6+ years that I’ve been at the Rockford Register Star covering the Rockford IceHogs, the AHL affiliate for the Chicago Blackhawks, I’ve […]

Daily video assingments

With the changing newspaper landscape, photographers are being asked more and more regularly to produce video pieces for the web. Sometimes these take the form of longer, more developed and produced video pieces. More frequently, they are projects that need to be turned around in day. These can pose a challenge. The 1DX and the daily grind

First impressions of the Canon EOS 1DX

For years and years, I’ve been shooting with the same camera. A trusty and reliable Canon EOS 1D Mark II (or Mark IIN). It may have been the finest 8 megapixel camera ever made. With that being said, it was getting a little long in tooth. Canon (and I’m sure other camera brands) only service their cameras for so long. After eight years or so, they stop manufacturing parts for and supporting “experienced” camera bodies. The 1d Mark II recently […]

The new job: Rockford

I’ve just about rounded out my first month at the Rockford Register Star in Rockford, Ill. This month has flown by. I love that I’m busy shooting again. The first day on the job was a little sluggish. Paperwork. And lots of it. That is until a vehicle rolled over on a snow-covered bypass. I rushed out there and got photos of the firefighters using the jaws of life to free the man stuck inside. And yes, that is snow […]
