My first hockey remote

There’s a first time for everything. Last Saturday, it was my first time hanging a remote camera for hockey. Don’t get me wrong. I’m no stranger to remotes in general. I’ve used them at other sports like basketball and soccer. Heck, I’ve even had a remote on the wing of airplane back in 2007. All that being said, in the 6+ years that I’ve been at the Rockford Register Star covering the Rockford IceHogs, the AHL affiliate for the Chicago Blackhawks, I’ve […]

Basketball: That’s a wrap!

March. Basketball tournament season. And it was a good one! The month started out with a couple really exciting regional games. Going into last week, our paper still had four local basketball teams in contention. And then we didn’t. Our basketball season crashed to a halt as three of the four teams lost on Tuesday night in sectional and supersectional matchups. The fourth team followed suit on Wednesday. They were all heartbreaking games that went right to the wire. On […]

February 2017: SO MUCH SPORTS

The title says it all. I was inundated with sports coverage in February. I’m not complaining. Basketball. Wrestling. A little swimming. And a just a touch of other stuff. I stayed busy last month. At the end of 2016, our community experienced a lot of loss. On Christmas eve, a house fire killed three kids. There were also two separate shootings that took the lives of teenagers. Their funerals were held at the beginning of 2017. First was the funeral for Lavontay Allen who was shot and […]

Best of 2016

I hate this time of year. This is the time when photographers pull together their best frames from last year. The solid daily frames are tossed aside and we’re left with an internet that is overwhelmed with the best of the best. It’s an amazing thing to see. But I hate it. Photographers make connections with their pictures. Sometimes you make a killer frame. Sometimes the story behind making the image is better than the image itself. That is something a viewer […]
