Odds and ends

I’ve made mention to photos I’ve taken earlier this year that had not yet published. Well, now they’ve published. Here’s a random selection of photos that I’ve been sitting on for a couple of months. I took portraits of several bearded gentlemen for a story (and the cover art) for our 815 Magazine. I found a gritty backdrop in the paper’s old press hall. I set up my lights (my old faithful DIY beauty dish) and shot each guy as if […]

Images from January 2017

January was a whirlwind. It was a very busy month for me, covering a wide variety of assignments. The month started off with a few very sad assignments. At the end of 2016, our community experienced a lot of loss. On Christmas eve, a house fire killed three kids. There were also two separate shootings that took the lives of teenagers. Their funerals were held at the beginning of 2017. First was the funeral for Lavontay Allen who was shot and […]

Gridiron 2014: How the shots were made

Last year, I mentioned that photographers can get attached to an image because of the back story. Some images might be technologically challenging to make. Others might have required hours of anticipation and preparation. When it comes to a contest, the back story doesn’t matter. The final image is all that counts. This year, […]

The new job: Rockford

I’ve just about rounded out my first month at the Rockford Register Star in Rockford, Ill. This month has flown by. I love that I’m busy shooting again. The first day on the job was a little sluggish. Paperwork. And lots of it. That is until a vehicle rolled over on a snow-covered bypass. I rushed out there and got photos of the firefighters using the jaws of life to free the man stuck inside. And yes, that is snow […]
